Maybe it was trying to loosen it's eggs or something.
As far as flies for Carp, not sure about the other two you mention Mac, but the ones I mentioned have worked for me and are in a book called CARP FISHING, that is why I tried them (plus I already had them)
Dryrod, they sound like GRASS CARP. A little tougher to catch because of the grass. Try a POPCORN or a CORN CLUSTER fly. Cotton seed fly would probably work great also.
