One possible problem is that you are priming (assuming this is one that must be primed) it more on the lake and as a result it is being flooded. My auger will usually work great unless I prime it too much. To avoid this I prime it one pump at a time and pull the rope, and if it doesn't start prime it one more pump and repeat. BTW -- the only time my auger would not start at all was when I took it to Huntington with -- you guess it -- TubeDude. BTW - this is also why I never leave home without my hand auger as a backup, just in case my power auger will not work.
