Are you sure that the cable wasn't meant to run through the float? On Vexilars this is the way they work, with an adjustable stop to adjust how far down the transducer hangs. It is helpful to be able to adjust the transducer to hang at or just below the surface of the ice. This is especially helpful when the ice gets a couple of feet, or more thick.
