Don't be afraid to fish openings or gaps in the phragmites (that cattail looking stuff that has invaded the shoreline). My best crappie catch last year was fishing through some thick floating mats of phragmites next to the impenetrable stand of the stuff near the shore. Dropped a tiny orange mousie jig tipped with a very small piece of crawler into a 12" opening, and proceeded to catch crappie after crappie. Decent size too.
