I use that type of bar for my ice checking in the early and late season. I walk out on the ice to where I know I am still shallow and strike it really hard with the pointed end. If I go through with one hit I back up nice and slow and wait a while before I get on again. If it takes 2 or more hits to get water then I cut a hole about 6 inches across pull the chunk of ice out and check the thickness from there. Never been through yet. Hope this helps. The advice about starting with light hits in a circle about the size you want has worked good for me as well.
