I have read that one over and over in a number of places but I have never gotten around to it. I have always just wiped of the bodkin with a paper towel or my pocket knife.
I would not know what to do with the excess steel wool. Last time I had some excess steel wool I had it saved in my tool box for a couple three of years. When I went to use it I found that it was all rusty so it did not work well as steel wooll. Also, It had made a mess in my tool box with all those little rust flakes smearing into the drawers contents. I guess I have always had that in the back of my mind.
