Great day on the Berry 10/9/07
#14
Don't rapalas have vmc hooks on them already? I'm pretty sure they do--even if the don't actually slap their name on it, but I could be wrong. I have to admit that I also-like some others-have always thought that rapalas--particularly the small xraps are everybit as effective as a pointer. Anyway, just as I had predicted, when I went to Sportsman's they were all out of ghost brown pattern. I ended up getting ghost minnow--pretty close to the same. They did have aurora gold, but thought I was supposed be be looking for aurora brown so I didn't buy one. Either way, we went up there and out on the water (my boss and me) at about 3:30. Wind was pretty substancial and to make matters worse his electric trolling motor puttered out. no problem though we took on the challenge of boat control as best we could, found a slightly more protected spot and started casting. He was using a 3in silverish tube on a 1/4 oz. jig and I was using the rich-man's pointer. I probably cast the pointer 75 times the whole time we were there and never got so much as a nibble. I tried fishing at different speeds, stop and to, ripping it, you name it. Meanwhile my boss caught two with his tube. I switched to the same setup as him, but it seemed to me that the tube was diving a little too fast. I moved to 2 inch white tube on an 1/8 oz jig and got one on my first cast. I caugt a couple more over the next half hour or so--often losing the fish at the boat--a testament to having good sharp hooks (I need to start making my own jigheads) I don't know if others have this same problem of sometimes wanting a bigger hook with less weight on the jig head or vice versa. Anyway, we stayed out until just before dark, wind and all. The purveyors of "absolutely no handling of fish" would be proud in that the majority of our fish came unbuttoned at the boat while trying to snap a quick picture in the water. We caught one cut over the slot, but all of the cuts and one rainbow were all REALLY thick and seemed super colorful and healthy looking. All fish, like it or not, were released. I don't have pics and am now writing this from Orlando where in less than 36 hours I will be out on the indian river lagoon fishing for redfish and speckled trout.--A great fishing week for me. Strawberry on tuesday, fly to florida on wednesday, fishing the flats on friday, fishing blue water on Monday. I have the best wife in the world!
