This is the type of rig that I use for catfishing on the river. That shad that you caught one day would have made excellent cut bait. I usually take shad or herring (they're nice and oily, which attracts catfish) and fillet them, cut the fillet in half short-ways and stick the hook through it a couple of times with the meat side out (skin toward the hook).
You can get these at *gasp* Wal-mart. The ones I use are made of steel leader with steel drops. Then get pre-setup hooks that have a nice sized hook on a piece of monofilament with a loop at the non-hook end and loop them through the rig. Toss a 2-ounce or so casting weight on the snap at the bottom of the rig (use a bigger weight for better bottom holding power in heavier current)
Works very nicely.
