I haven't the foggiest what the backing spec was. Only thing I remember is putting on the amount of backing recommended and I had problems with the binding because I could not reliably get good even coils wound onto the spool. So I took off backing.

I am not following your thought about practis casting. It just happened that a couple of times I had some spare time and was wanted to practice some casts with my five weight before a trip to Colorado. So I took the 8 wt too since I had not ever used it and I had just gotten the Battenkill reel for it. so I tied a piece of yarn onto the end of the leader. Blue gill kept attacking the yarn so I said what the heck. When I lost the yarn in some trees I tied on a bluegill popper. Then did a little more practise.
