I was checking on line about the pistol pete.. and several sites reccommend using the bubble float/fly rig on a spinning rod.. I can tell you from my limited experience with this type of rig that it would defintiely work well with the pistol pete.. if nothing else I could cast that further out and work it in slowly with a spinning rod than I can currently using a fly rod.. but...
I am doing my darndest to not use anything but the fly rod.. with being skunked so much it is very tempting to put the fly rod aside and use a spinning rig.. but then Id lose the challenges that fly fishing gives me.. and that is what I like about the sport...
