Spadefishing tips and tactics
#3
Hey there sheephedz, long time no see. How's things been going? Have you made your move yet?

Anyways, as far as catching spades from a pier, not likely. You will see a few come up on a pier in the early spring, but spades generally hold at the near to close offshore reefs or boeys. Spades will also bite shrimp, which is usually what anglers on a pier catch them on while bottom fishing.

BUT, it never hurts to try. Getting Jellyballs from a pier is easy. Cast net them, it's that simple. You can buy a cast net for 20 bucks at any coastal tackle store. You'll just have to add about 60 feet of rope in order to use it from a pier. If you don't know how to throw a cast net, you better learn. LOL, that's the cheapest way to get bait, because it's free. Plus, you're not considered a local until you can toss a castnet. [Tongue] If you need help, just let me know. If you're in the area of Myrtle Beach/ Murrells Inlet, I have no problem getting up with you and personally showing you how to effectively use a cast net, it would be my pleasure. [cool] I'm also setting up a date to get a few members together on Myrtle Beach State park pier if you'd like to join us. I'm going to bring some extra gear and just spend the day fishing with everyone and passing on some tips that might help everyone out. I might even bring a little propane grill or something, it's hard to tell. Anyone is invited and welcome. [Smile]

Anyhoo, back to the subject. Once you get a few jellyballs, lower them down in the water and watch for the spades to start nibbling on them. If you start seeing them, you're in luck and will be in for some hot action. The only problem you'll have if you start catching them is keeping the other pier anglers from moving in on your spot. LOL, but that's pier fishing. You'll also need a drop net to land them. Drop nets are also cheap and are common policy, along with a rope gaff, for the stronger species of fish caught from a pier.

Let me know if there is anything else I can help out with partner. Make sure and let me know how things are going!
