my little project
#25
thanks...

well I ended up in the home depot for 3 hours today...

bouy dose my legs hurt...

I went in looking for what ever material was available for the job.

in lumber that would meet my requirments of 3/4 inch by 11 1/4 inch.

I needed tree five foot peices.

I found oak that demention, only deal was it was laminated to get the width. first hot foggy day the glue would desolve.... so that was out, I looked at the back of the pile and found one peice 1x12 I would have to take it in a 12 foot lenth... Problem is I would have to buy 2 twelve footers at 75.oo each...

one guy told me to use preasure treated plywood... I would of course have to buy a 50.oo sheet and spend hundreds of hours of sanding.. I am not that energenic...

then they had poplar at that dimention but I have split a lot of popluar in my day, and that stuff splinters almost as easy as bolsom... I could see the hull hammering and spliting the wood with the mounting screws... so I passed on that material..

I asked if they had cedar at those dementions and they said no, but they did have pine.... and we dont want pine if we dont want poplar....

about that time I started wishing haggarty lumber was still in business, I could get anything I wanted there. special sizes could be reduced by a planer.

I was about to give up and go with the ply wood, but man is that stuff heavy, but not as heavy as the plastic board... which is good stuff... easy to work with.. expencive and heavy as 2x12 so I took back the minwax urithane the girl in the paint area gave me.

then I stumbled across 7/8"x12"x7' cedar. finished on three sides and rough inside. its only an eighth thicker so I figured i could sand down down that much. I went though a hundred boards to find three peices with out a big ol knot in it or split or beat up....

so it was back to the paint department to pick back up the paints I had taken back to the shelf. (I hate leaving baskets of stuff laying around.)

I picked up the minwax and looked at the lawn equipment and remembered the last time I did lawn chiars and 3 years later it was blistering and bubbling and pealing. I thought to my self I do not want to spend the rest of my life sanding and painting my boat seats. So I grabbed a can of tompsons pluss.

the cedar ran about 20.oo each. the sealer about 15.oo. this is the most least expencive way to go...

granted this means I will have to re-seal it every three years, but I can live with that... an hour to do the tops of three benches isnt to bad... and its not like any one will be sitting directly on the wood not that it would matter after a couple days of soaking in...

I thought of using the urithane stuff they put on wall clocks and plaques... and at a gamble of an aditional 20 dollars per seat I decided gainst it... I do like the finish,

I managed to get the lumber home and inside in between the rain splerts.

tonight winter sets back in for about a week... Highs in the mid thirties. I wont be doing any wood work for a wile...

now that every thing is out of the boat it would be a good time to run electric harneses.

I spent an hour at the boat shop looking at running lights and electrical terminals for the boat.

one peice in particular I was looking for was a quick conect for the boat motor, it has an electric start and the motor will be coming in at the end of every trip.

now the motor has about 10 foot of cable that I have to run though the boat every time it comes in and out. I want to wire the boat so the battry is in the middle of theboat, gass tank in the front of the boad and motor n the back. with my lard can and a couple marine batteries, motor and gas tanks, it puts a lot of weight on my end... not that the boat cant handle it, its just why should it, and besides with just me in the boat it will ride better...

I am thinking something with a brass bolt and brass wing nut combination.

I found the switch and fuse relay boxes for the boat so I can run lights and maybe even a radio[angelic] too. I want to do some after light walleye fishing this year...
