Cedar is known for it's durability around the elements. Oak is good, but I used oak on a previous project and it didn't make it through 2 seasons. I redid the console of my boat with cedar and it's super tough.
Personally, I wouldn't use a "water sealer" on the wood. I'd put about 6 thin coats of Urethane on it. NOT POLYURETHANE, just plain old urethane. The poly is for indoor use, and trust me, after a few months in the sun and rain, it WILL start to scab over. The first time I redid my console, I redid it with the wrong type of stuff. It never hurts to read the can before you buy it. [pirate] LOL
If you really want to get fancy, they make a plastic based board now. Alot of companies are using them for outside decking because of how strong and long lasting they are. You may want to look into that. It would save you alot of work too. [cool]
