Oregon Fishing Update

Fisheries Update
March 7th – March 13th, 2003

The springers are in the Columbia. Nothing to get too excited about but bank anglers and some boat fishers have had a few great days in the Columbia River gorge earlier in the week. The Willamette fishery had some decent action over the weekend but has since slowed and if the weather does what it is supposed to do, it might put fishing out for a short time. Willamette Falls steelhead passage is getting better as time passes.

The Santiam Rivers should be improving for wild winter steelhead within the next week. The Sandy is only fair for steelhead but a few springers continue to be rumored from the lower stretches. The Clackamas is still putting out some decent numbers of broodstock fish along with natives if you put in a full day over there. North coast streams experienced relatively low numbers for the first week of March but action was still consistent.

The Trask produced best for me but the Nestucca and Nehalem were also fair most of the week. It seems most of the fish came a week early over here. The Siletz seems fairly scarce of Palmer Creek fish but the natives are certainly in! It seems the same on the Siuslaw. Yaquina Bay is producing well for crabbers but the herring are all but gone.

The Alsea hatchery is tagging and recycling steelhead from the hatchery. Umpqua steelheading has stalled but a the first couple of springers have been taken at Elkton. Steelhead limits continue to come from the Rogue River. The Chetco has been producing well for winter steelies.

The Grande Ronde River is producing well for summer steelhead for the few that are pursuing them. Rock and jetty fishing is productive now for various species. Trout were stocked this week in Willamina, St. Louis, Junction City and E.E. Wilson ponds all got legal trout this week. In the Northwest Zone, Town, Cape Meares, Smith, Coffenbury and Lost Lakes in addition to Lorens and Vernonia Pond have been planted with surplus steelhead.
