I agree with you totally, That brings me back to "having more control" with the loop that's being made. It's easier for me to do that with the surgeons loop.
Also, with lures/flies in mind, if the loop is too big, it gives an un-natural appearance to the lure/flie as well; not to mention the drag i'm sure it creates with a fly. Especially with fish that have excellent vision, and use thier sense of sight as a primary hunting trigger, the big loop would surely spook them more times than not.
