You're right on, I use that knot quite often when I have to scrape up a drop rig in a hurry. I'll thread my hook on before I double the line to begin the loop. It allows the hook to have alot of freedom.
Another knot that accomplishes the same thing, but a tad more complicated is the "perfection loop." I can tie it, but like you, i'd rather use the surgeon's loop. If you've got time though, it is a much smaller and tidy looking knot.
