I also share your philosophy with the "you get what you pay for." I don't know how many times i've shared that very same point with other anglers on the forums. Especially since I target big game, I can't afford to get cheap gear.
However, since I was just thinking of targeting species of a lesser signifigance to start, I don't need to spend 300 bucks on a fly reel. There are times when I wish I lived near the flats in Florida, I wouldn't mind spending the money for an international series Penn or gold series Fin Nor fly reel then.
I've always enjoyed tying on a tiny popper to my ultra lite spinning tackle for bream. It's so awesome to watch a huge blue gill slam the little popper on top water. That's some easy and quick afternoon action. Even when I fish offshore, I love top water. Tossing a plug or spoon into a school of feeding bonito or spanish is such a rush. If you lived closer, i'd say if you show me how to fly fish, i'll take you offshore in the ocean. LOL, but that's an awful long drive. [
