I have never been to the Gorge, but am concidering trying it out with hopes of catching burbot, small lake trout and hopefully kokanee. I would appreciate any information regarding how it's "catching" up there, where to go to try it out and what to use. You can drive into Firehole Canyon no problem. The road is paved and plowed. It's also well traveled. Just head south on Hwy 191 out of Rock Springs. There is a sign for Firehole Canyon heading west. Just follow the road down to the lake and park on the launch. Make sure you have a gas auger though, ice was 14-18 inches last week. Glow jigs and spoons from 1/4-1/2 oz have caught fish. Tip them with frozen sucker meat for lakers and burbot, or meal worm for rainbows. Fish close to the bottom for the lakers and burbot, and around 15-20ft for suspended rainbows. Make sure you have a Wyoming reciprocal stamp if you're up at Buckboard or Firehole.

I have no snowmobile nor 4 wheeler/4wheeldrive, so that will have to be concidered in any recomendations. I'd be traveling from Layton; any recommendations as to where to spend the night ? Rock Springs is close, about 30-45 minutes from Firehole Canyon. If you fish Buckboard, as some of the other anglers have recommended, you would definitely be better off staying in Green River. If there isn't any storms, you shouldn't need a 4-wheel drive. Driving in on Firehole or Buckboard road is pretty uneventful, they keep those roads relatively clear.
