GLASS RODS
#26
Today you have S glass and E glass. I'm not really sure of the difference other than E glass is slower.
These, are not the same as they were 20+ years ago. Different tapers and the new glass make a world of difference.
With graphite rods, anyone can cast and look good. Put them on a slower rod, bamboo or 'glass, and you really see the mistakes.
Learning to cast with glass and do it right (timing is everything) will make one an all around bettter caster. You really notice the difference casting a graphite rod after a month or so of glass throwing.
The big thing with fly fisherman (I'm going out on a limb and say newbies or the once a month ff'er) today is, "I wanna try and buy a bamboo rod, or a fiberglass. They pick up a Montegue or SB on e-bay for $50 and go out and fish it only to be disappointed. They're heavy and clumsy and made for wet fly fishing. An original $10 rod 50 or so years ago is still a $10 rod today.
The other alternative is 'glass. Fenwick, Garcia, Wonderods, Phillipson etc are one's to look for if you want used inexpensive glass.
Today's makers are on par with the best. Steffan Brothers, McFarland, Diamondback, T&T, Scott are all building gems of glass rods and the prices show it. You'll be paying as much for these as you will good graphite.
Todays 'glass rods are not your grandfathers 'glass rods.
But they are a blast to fish with.
