I have to agree with BLM and Kent and any others that use the newer color LCD fishfinders. I own the M68c by Lowrance. The backlight is always on and it keeps it warm all the time. Going on my 3rd year now ice fishing with it. (It goes in my boat also, I have multiple transducers). The M68c has a "Flasher" screen that emulates a flasher. It is real time and I have used it with some success...but I like using the regular sonar screen better. I haven't used the flasher screen since the first year I bought it.
I've never had problems with it "freezing up", and I've had it in places where I have to keep stuff in my cooler to thaw out!
Color LCD is the way to go.
Oh, by the way, it also has a GPS built in to it, and the price came down $75.00 in the last 6 months, to $325 or so where it was $400.
