I my self have only caught one stergeon in my life time, giveing me the right to say the biggest fish I ever caught was to small to keep.[crazy]
that is true, for at the time I caught it in the st clair river from the michigan shore I hooked and landed a White stergeon that measured 59 inches in lenth, at the time the minimum limit to keep was 60 inches. I was in my early teens, and caught it on a zebco 202 rod and reel combo, using a big fat jucy night crawler. it would have been nice to have a photo of that catch, but we didnt own a camera at the time. black and whit film was still the every day film of choice.
I was the only one on that 1/4 mile strech of river who caught a sturgeon that night, there were a lot of unhappy campers there when I told them I had a big one and they would have to mover or get tangled. needless to say, they got tangled and their lines got broken. They thought I was just a young kid screwing around, casting and recasting, but ya know how it goes when something grabs you line and moves it down the river, Ya have to try and set the hook. there was an older angler standing next to me, at the time he may have been in his mid to late 40's. he was the most anoyd of all, I know I probably would have been then and have been in similar situations on the other side of the coin. It goes with the teritory,
any way he saw the thing I brought in and said what the devil is that? I told him it is an albino stergeon, I didnt know there were white stergeon in michigan waters, let alone know there were white stergeon to begin with. needless to say the gent was discusted and said is that what every one is here fishing for, I said, I dont know about the guys down your way, but up my way there is about 10 of us fishing for sturgeon. with that being said he pulled in his rigs and left. he was mutterin something as he left, being half deaf I couldnt realy tell what he was saying, I was just a smigent bit happer cause I got two more feet of elbo room that me and the guy standing on the other side of him at the rail of the board walk split evenly.
we fished till the wee hours of the night to the point where the cold became a comfort factor and going home to a worm bed seemed like a good place to be.
I have been back to that same spot a half dozen time with only suckers sheephead and goby to show for my touobles. but you can bet that if the opertunity ever arises I will be back on that boardwalk looking for another stergeon, only now the size limit is slotted between 40 and 60 inches. should I catch the same one I released he will be in his 50's or 60's and a record worth mentioning.
