before steal and the comming of the white man to the american continants, my ansestors used to pride them selves on having a good squaw,
they would use small rabbit rib bones and a Squaw with a good head of hair could tie up a couple peices of bone to be used for ice fishing. Tipping it off with an offering of a small peice of elk, moose or bear. (yep, there were more elk than deer back then) one can only emagine
out west the plains indians just speard the fish, they didnt have time to sit around and wait for the fish to bite, if they did they would loose track of the buffalo heards.
now the eskamos indians used seal bone, and again a prize squaw was some one to sit around the igloo to chew the fat with. "bigger hook because of the bigger fish" but mostly spears...
I myself have caught fish on just a split shot sinker, no hook, the fish would grab ahold of the sinker and not let go... so yep luck in timming is a big thing. being lucky enough to be there during the feeding frenzy you can even catch them with your thumb like o'l Little Jack Horner... I have the scars and a pick of a pike I caught throgh a hole in the ice as proof...[shocked]
I have heard of hand carved wood hooks, but have yet to see one.
the moral is, if you are out there at the right time you can catch them on anything....
