First fish was a trout at the Escondido, Ca, Trout hatchery. Yes there WAS a hatchery there in 1948. I caught five within two minutes and at 40c each dad said I had to quit,, I was breaking the bank.. He madr $60 a week in those days. Remember gas was 12c per gallon......
But the second fishing trip was most memorable. Grandpa took me to the "lake" in Mission Valley, San Diego. He always casted overhead. Not to the side, I mean overhead! He told me to stand behind so I would be out of the way..
I remember him bringing the pole up and over.. Then with a hard snap he swung the pole forward. For some reason unknown to gramps, the pole wouldnt swing forward.. I knew why....
The dang hook was in my back.....
I still feel the tug.... OH! Baby!. ( I was 5 )
Same day Grandpa hooked my dad in the ear....
We didnt go fishing again until I was ten years old. Then off to the DEEP SEA....
