i personally find them very annoying. Pop-up's only give me the desire to not frequent websites that employ them. When i want to purchase something, then i click on links that offer the product that i am interested in purchasin at that particular time.

I am somewhat unique in that aspect, i guess...can definitely understand the concept from a marketing perspective.
