Remember this: There is no "color" at lake trout depths, only hues. The lure is either light or dark. I use black or white 99 percent of the time. Everything else is just a shade of gray at 100 feet. Color of lure is the least important aspect of lake trout fishing. The second least-important aspect is which lure.
Presentation, presentation, presentation. Boat control. 100 percent focus (you can eat, drink, and pee later). Proper grip on the rod (relaxed, not tight). Proper body posture (Not sitting on your butt). These are the things that matter. It also helps greatly if you're on the fish and they're looking at your lure. "You can't catch 'em where they aint!"
As for jig materials, plastic is versatile and easy, and there's tons of sizes, designs, and colors readily available. Marabou, bucktail, and anything else "furry" will also work. Again, the fish will tell you what they want. Well, actually, they'll usually tell you what they DON"T want, which is just about everything! Once in a while one will actually bite . . . Just keep your jig in the water, on the fish, and wait, wait, wait . . . And be ready when your quarter-second opportunity comes.
