[font "Trebuchet MS"][black][size 3]Elk,
The uses you mention (jigging for macks, trolling for wiper and musky) just happen to be my main-stay of fishing. So, I have to chime in here ( and the very experienced fishermen on this board will definitely set me straight). Ever since I discovered braided or super braid lines like FireLine or SpiderWire, I realized that they are basically micro sized “ropes” with multiple strands. I liked that concept and started using them. I have been quite pleased (even impressed) with them ever since. One of the things I like most about them is that sun light has little or no effect on them like it does for mono or fluoro lines. So they last a year or two longer than mono or fluoro lines. They are also a lot more abrasive resistant than mono. Fluorocarbon lines are better than mono but not as resistant as braded.
I think that Spider Wire casts better than Firewire but casting isn’t much of an issue for the uses you indicated.
But because they braded lines are easily seen under water, I always tie on a fluorocarbon leader with the double-uni knot (as AFdan described). Also, running a leader allows me to break off a snag without shortening my main line.
However, if you plan to jig through the ice with braded lines, then I am not so sold on braded. It tends to absorb water and freeze increasing the diameter of the line and decrease it’s flexibility.
But in general I vote for braded. FireLine as my favorite.
P.S. Elk, once Willard warms up a bit, lets fish it together one day.
