I was married in 98'. although there was a "human" best man, the true best man there was my Golden, Norman. He was the best friend a family could have, I inherited Norm when my wifes grand dad passed. He never left my side except to attend to wife while she was pregnant, and after that he traded me in for the baby who I think he believed was his not mine. one night in 00' Norm took a turn and lost color and became very lethargic, we took him to emergency room at 2am and the vet brought the bad news that a cancer polip on his liver had ruptured and he was slowly bleeding out into his own body cavity. we put him down. he was not the first pet lost during my life time, but he was MY first pet lost in my life. he wasnt my families pet he was my best freind, overcoming the status of "family dog" he was norm my drinkin, fishin, woman chasing buddy. I still have a pic of him in a black bow tie at my wedding, and the pictures of all the "guys" at the wedding include all of us sitting with him all of us in our ties ( it was a formal affair). I still miss him but I still feel him too and I know he showed us to the girls we have now, Roxy and Lady, a Golden and black lab respectively, and they together make up about one norm....so I think he knew he couldnt be with us, so he got us the next best thing, and he's waiting with my wifes gramps for us to show up. still in his tie waiting for the party to start again.
Sorry to hear of your loss, I have been there and am planning on being there at least 2 times more.
but I wouldnt want it any other way, the fun is getting there with them, and joining them after the dance for the post party.
good luck. stay strong.
