Pennsylvania on Ice
#3
DTC,

Here is a tip for people wishing to fish Lake Erie through the ice. My parents live next to Godfrey Run in Lake City PA, I try to get back there every couple of years near Christmas and the Steelhead fishing can be awesome at the mouth of the run through the ice. The heads tend to stay off the mouth and congregate under the edge of the ice near a spot of open water at the mouth, they"ll wait until dark to move into the run. You can try to cast attactor type lures (little Cleo ect.) into the open pool, but a system that worked better for years is: drill a hole near the edge of the safe ice, use sucker spawn (a type of fly, you can find it at Poor Richards on Rt 5 in Fairview or Elk Creek sports in Lake City if they're stil there) tipped with one salmon egg. Use no weight and let the current from the outflow take it 40 feet or so from the hole. If you don't get a hit reel in and keep trying, watch you're line when it speeds up coming off the reel there is a head attached. Stick em and grin. My brother and I used this system for years and it seemed to work. I haven't been back to PA since 94 so I'm not sure what the PA regs say about fishing the lake this time of year. But if it's legal, try it, it works. It also works at the mouths of Elk and Walnut Creek and Trout Run.
