crestliner,
Thanks for the report. I was just reading through the threads on the Idaho board and realized that I didn't respond to you question about ice on the reservoirs in the the Malad area. I thought I typed a response but for whatever reason I don't see a reply from me in the thread you started. Just so you know I didn't intentionally not respond to your question.
What did you catch most of your fish on Saturday?
Friday afternoon the fish weren't too selective at Devil Creek. The smaller fish took the smaller jigs (jigs less than 1") better and as usually the lighter color jigs worked best. They seemed to take jigs tipped with Night crawlers and Mealworms equally as well. About half of the fish would bite really light but I had a few that tried to take one of my rods down the hole before I could get to it. Adding scent and fresh bait often as well as jigging occasionally seemed to help.
wiperhunter2,
Even though you directed the question at crestliner I thought I would through my 2 cents.
If there are any natural reproduced rainbows in Devil Creek Reservoir then there aren't very many. Almost all of the trout the F&G have planted in Devil Creek for the last 5 years have been Triploids, which can't reproduce. Over 95% of the fish I catch out of Devil Creek have been in there less than a year. Only a couple of the fish that I caught on Friday had carried over from 2004. Devil Creek is managed as a put and take fishery and offers high catch rates but not many large fish. Unfortunately when a 3lb fish is caught in Devil Creek the angler almost always keeps it. Combined that with the number of anglers that fish Devil Creek and there won't be very many large fish in Devil Creek. I can't complain much because the F&G does manage other reservoirs in the area so the fish have a chance to grow up before they are put in the cooler. I'll keep a couple fish for dinner occasionally so I'm not going to knock anyone that wants to bring a limit home.
