I've tried the hammer thing. A 28oz. framing hammer, so it's not a "household" hammer. This worked for many a hundred fish, but I had one particularly big kitty that just wouldn't go to a happier place. I actually broke the skull and imbedded the hammer at least an inch, but that thing just wouldn't die.
This is when I figured out a very morbid, yet effective method to getting the cat to give up the meat.
Take a 20 penny nail, and drive it straight through the center of the cat's head and into at least a 2 inch thick plank. this usually ends their fight for life, but even if it doesn't, the kitty doesn't have any choice but to let you take what you want. I make a slice around the head, peel the skin off with pliers, and fillet away. What's left is decent fertilizer if you can handle the smell.
