Old mining towns are good, but not as good as the tailings piles. The miners of yester year did not have the technology we have today. If they could not see the gold they figured it wasn't there. I have found some great pieces by scanning tailings piles and smashing the rocks that give a reading. If you can travel to Idaho try the rivers that were dredged by machines looking for gold. Most of them could not seperate big nuggets only the dust. There are nuggets to be found if you look for them.
