You are exactly right. The longer a fish fights, the less chance of survival after you C&R it.
When a fish is stressed under a fight, it releases lactic acid. A small amount is like a little of a minor shock to the fish. A large dose is like an OD on any drug.
For those who enjoy the long fight and follow up with the fish as table fare, don't complain about the tast of the meat. The build up of the lactic acid also alters the flavor.[cool]
