All good advice give but I want to point out one small factor thats often ignored, Noise!
I fish for Eye normally just before and after dark whether its open water or not. I've found Wallies can be very timid about noise of any type when coming up on a ridge, flat, or into iced over springs to feed. I find (if using a power auger) I do the best if I drill my holes 1 or 2 hours before I actually plan to fish a location, and If using a hand augar, atleast 30 minutes before hand. One one thing, I never set on a 5gal. bucket while fishing for eye through the ice. The sound of the least little slide of the bucket seems to carry to the fish like its a loud speaker.
Good luck Dave!
