Right you are BLM! I do not affiliate myself with Republican or Democrat. I tend to vote some of each in most elections(some local republican candidates disgust me, same with some democrats, some impress me, same with democrats). I personally despise the little checkbox on the ballot that allows you to vote straight republican or straight democrat for all candidates. It just encourages people not to learn what each individual candidate has to say, discourages people from learning more about the platform of each person, instead of each party. Of course there will be a wide spectrum of viewpoints even within each party. There are conservative democrats and liberal republicans. You have mentioned some cases where people are not "cookie cutter" one way or the other.
Personally I think Utah could benefit from a more balanced political climate. There are extremists on both sides of the field. USUALLY, we end up with something in the middle that is pretty close to how things should be, or at least a good compromise when there are extreme opposing viewpoints. When it leans too far one way or the other, we end up with an uneven balance and often bad results. If there weren't environmentalists that often seem to care more about animals than people, then noone would care about the animals at all. There has to be a balance between industry and environmental protection. I don't think we would want to return to the dark ages, get rid of our pollution-causing, fossil fuel-burning cars just to save our environment. On the other hand, we don't want to poison everything around us including ourselves by continuing to pump out more and more pollution.
