I do beleive fish have long term memories, just not as long as one might think tho' in addition I think their actions driven more by instinct than memory. some days I have caught the same fish over and over to the point of boardom and still the same fish would continue to bite. other days the fish would take a bite then spit it out and the next cast the fish would look at the bait or lure and turn away, I would change the setup then he would hit again and then not fall for the same lure or bait on the next cast.
so what I think is that their urge to bite is more powerfull than their memory or sence of danger. how ever there those monsters of the deap that have avoided capture by angler or prediter to become that awsome size. only one in ten thousand ever become master angler size. Like the big bucks they had to do something right to get that far. something that instinct alone was not able to set them apart from the rest of the school.
to make my point about long term memory salmon will travle thousands of miles through ocean up fresh water rivers and streams to the vary brook where they were born when it come time to spawn.
