[cool]I was born there, dude, and lived there till I was 5, then moved to a town 60 miles east of there called Fallon (about the size of tooele or so).
Anyhooters, I agree with most of what was said above. Lake Tahoe is over 1000 feet deep in some areas, so you don't need to venture out that far from shore before you are in really deep water. That lake is AT LEAST as clear as Bear Lake. Actually, I'd say it's more clear. TubeDude was right about the Truckee River that runs through Reno. There's browns and rainbows in there a plenty, and now, they are re-introducing the Lahontan Cutthroat's in there the last year or two. Through town it gets fished pretty heavily, but go up I-80 out of town a few miles and between Reno and Truckee, CA is where most of the big Browns are caught. As TubeDude also said, the Sierra Nevada's border the west side of Reno and they are full of little mountain lakes. Donner Lake which is just before Donner Summit (Off I-80) heading to Sacramento (Ever heard of "The Donner Party?") is a fine big mountain Lake with lots of big fish, but you better hit it in the morning or evening, 'cause during the day you'll most likely need a downrigger. I forgot how deep it is, but I think 200 feet isn't out of the question.
If you were going there in the fall, early spring, or winter time, I'd say Pyramid Lake, without question. Like Tubedude said, Monster Lahontan Cut's. World Record was taken from there in 1927 at 41 lbs. There's unofficial stories of 60 pounders taken from there around the same time period, but now you'll get em between 10-18lbs all the time in the winter. Unforntunatly, the lake is on the piute indian res. and they close it to trout fishing from May til Oct., but I think you can go after Sacramento Perch this time of year, but they are hard to find. I'd say go elsewhere this time of year. You can go to my stepdad's website to see photos. www.wescraigs.net He might also have some updates from the other surrounding reno lakes, 'cause he lives in northern nevada.
If you are after warm water fish, Rye Patch Res. near Winnamucca isn't bad, but it's a 2.5 hour drive from Reno. I'd head to my old stomping ground, which is only 1/2 hour away on hwy 50 called "Lahontan Res." great place to take the tube out if you have one. This lake has a TON of White Bass, some nice Walleye, Channel Cat's, Bullheads, Carp, and a few Rainbows if you are right where the truckee canal dumps in. We always did well trolling rooster tails, mepps comets, yellow or white in those marrabou crappie jigs, etc., but that was before I knew anything about plastics, so I'd try those to.
Anyway, I've rambled too much here, and it's time for bed, but hopefully this info will help. Good luck!! If you want a great place to eat, go to John Asquaga's Nugget in Sparks. There is like 5 different restraunts in there and they all rock!! Or, try The Peppermill in Reno. Same thing, about 5 restaraunts and they all rock.
Have fun!
