There is a species that looks similar without the sounds. It is called a Corbina. Not to be confuse with the Corvina which is a much larger species.

I have caught on occasion, the Corbina and Yellow Croaker on the same fishing trip. Both the Yellow Croaker and the Corbina can be caught in the inshore waters at depths from 5' up to 60'.
