Although the maximum size of saugers is less than half that of walleyes, they are highly desirable game fish. They have white flaky meat much like that of a walleye.
But catching saugers can be tricky, especially in cold water. They have a frustrating habit of sucking on the bait without swallowing it. If you're using a minnow, it will often come back with a ripped up tail. The solution is to use a "stinger" hook.
Look for saugers on a sandy or sand - gravel bottom, usually where there is light current.
To catch short - striking saugers, use a jig and minnow with a stinger hook.
