I put snaps on lures which don't have a smooth loop to attach line, such as most spoons, in order to avoid getting my line cut by attaching directly to such lures. I, however, leave the snap on the lure, and tie a new knot each time I change lures or after fighting a heavy fish to better ensure the line doesn't break because of a strained knot. I rarely use a swivel. Some lures, such as a Super Duper, rely on line twist to produce their intended action. The Super Duper spins in one direction (and moves sideways in that direction) until the line is sufficiently twisted to cause the lure to start spinning in the opposite direction (and then moves sideways in the other direction). Using a swivel on such lures would eliminate line twist which is required for their designed action.
