as of friday , houghton lake had areas of ice up to 18" thick , up to is the key phrase . the smaller lakes have a 2 to 3 foot gap of open water at the shore line .
Monday was the last day of snow we had in the northern half of the county . my driveway had roughley 6 inches of ice still on it at the time . even in 4 wheel drive i slide down it in the mornings . thursday and friday it warmed up enough that the melt off cut groves down it , just wide enough to get your tires wedged in them. the weather man said another cold front is comming thru this evening , his reports are begining to sound like a broken record .
i don't know were fred is getting his info from but were have high water conditions here . even the usually 4 foot wide trout stream across the road is now trippled in width . the overflo gates on wiggins lake dam are still opened and on the au sable there is only about 6" difference in water debth between the coffer and the river . i saw one dark male cought yesterday , i had one on as well , but only for about ten seconds . that was all the excitement for the day . the water temps are too low for a push of fish from lake huron . fishing at the pierhead was "extreme " . high winds and low temps left only the brave and foolish fishing , several first hand reports of only 2 fish between everyone cought all day were reported .
there were dosens of guys out with there spin rods and in the water on the fly , by noon it looked like a ghost town . as a regular on that river i have come to know a few of the other fishermen , those who drove the furthest stayed the longest . i was there dispite being finally bitten by the cold or flu bug .
these pics were taken last week , but are no diferent than yesterdays conditions other than the higher water level and cooler temps this saturday .
the photo dates have to be reset with every battery change .
note my tackle box on the rail next to the rod , big fish rules !
