Daniel, I've read the same thing somewhere. I think it was in a magazine.
Recently on In-Fisherman tv, they were showing how to retrieve a deep hook from bass through the gills. You actually reach through the gills to get to the hook, do your little twist and turn and pop the hook out. They say removing the hook with little to no injury, if at all possible, is much better than leaving the hook in.
I would never dream of ripping a hook out unless it was a garbage fish to be used as fertilizer in the garden, and I needed the hook back. Then again, the only fish I've ever done that to was a bullhead.
