Ira and I have been using this method, trolling for crappie for many years, even at Willard, when the water is clear. Yes, we were using my 4# DR balls, with 20 to 30' setbacks. As I have mentioned before, we learned this method of catching crappie at PV using DR's from another BFT member. Nice way to spend a Fall day and we have caught several TM either trolling or jigging at PV, always fun to get that bonus fish. We haven't caught any this year but we have caught crappie there that were 14", in the past.
