Instead of going to the Gorge go to Pelican Lake in May. It's probably the best spot in the state for someone just learning to catch largemouth. Lots of 11 to 14 inch bass. They are very willing to play. Try spinner baits, jigs or topwater. It's about the closest you can get to guaranteed action in the spring. There are a few toads also.
