I've attended Jared Johnson's (and others) seminars at the International Sportsman's Expositions and learned that Kokanee feed on plankton and though they bite lures, their purpose for biting lures is not eating small fish, but protection of their plankton food source from competition feeding on it.
Though tiny squid don't exist in fresh water feeding on the plankton, the Kokanee seem to not know that, so perhaps a lure that imitates tiny fish will get the same reaction. Let us know.
I've taken advice from some of the fishing professionals to try things to find out what works and what doesn't because most times it doesn't and people generally want to only go with what is tested and proven to work and that is generally more productive.
But, there is value in learning what works and what doesn't by experimenting. Most fishermen experiment within a more narrow range of changing up size and color a little of what is working. But, I experiment with more variation.
It all depends on your goals. If I want the most fish, I could do what everyone else does. But, I like to learn and try things and sometimes I'm not trying for the most and instead trying for big fish.
