Heavy tackle is always a must when certain conditions call for it. Sometimes heavier line is necessary for certain types of structure. I am not familiar with milfoil. I do fish alot of underwater weeds in the fresh water and lots of kelp in the salt water. That's where heavier line is important. Also if you are fishing heavy underwater structure. ie: logs, trees, and fallen brances. Those can do a number on your line.

There are some types of line that are designed for such use.
