In addition to crappie magnets, here are a couple more that have worked well for me this year:

The smaller size is what I've used for Panfish, especially the crappie. I think I'll be using the larger version of the rib shad next year for walleye.
As you said, "getting them to attack for whatever reason is the goal and finesse fishing seems to be the best way.", I could not agree with you more.
