It happens, I'd suggest using bigger hooks 5/0 or 6/0 and keep the tips open so the bait doesn't shield the hook from being able to engage with the fish when you set it... Time will help you learn the best sizes and shapes of bait to work better, but I still have the same problem often, so figure you win some, you'll lose some... These days I skin my bait and thread it on like a worm. I don't use too big of bait either (1.5 to 2" in both directions), but I do cover the hook pretty full except around the point... I think the fish carry that in their mouth and we tend to pull it out unless the tip of the hook catches hold...Just my thoughts as to how it's working... Better luck next time... J
