Is monofilament dead?

I have never used anything but mono on any of my rigs, but I do not get out fishing all the time and I only use spinning reels. I bought a baitcaster and when I took it in to Sportsman's Warehouse to fill it with line I called ahead and they told me someone would be able to help me know how to cast it, but that did not happen and the first time I tried to cast it, with the instruction I had gleaned from the internet, I got such a horrendous tangle I just took it off the rod and it sits in a box.
I am sorry this went way off topic in a hurry - just frustrated.
