Trolling line

I'm sure this has been discussed several times but I can't find any posts. I have 4 trolling poles 2 with lead core. 2 with 8 lb fluorocarbon for my down rigger. Is it personal preference on using mono or fluoro. I fish for kokes and trout just don't know about stretch or drag on the water.
