skunk
#1
I've been out a couple of times now since tying up FG's chironomid patterns with absolutely no success. In fact yesterday I went up to Huntington Res and pulled the skunk (I had a few light hits on a double renegade but otherwise...)

So, I 've been fishing in 12 - 15 feet of water and trying to get my flies 1 -2 feet off the bottom (under an indicator). I've been anchored so I shouldn't have been moving much.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, either on chironomidding or lake fishing in general from a pontoon. I've caught some nice fish this year from my boat, but without any kind of regularity.

FG is definately the one to go to for c-mid fishing. But I have had a few good days on c-mids. Just make sure that you're at the right depth then keep changing colors/patterns until you get into them.

One day on Vernon I couldn't get any hits on mids so without switching them out I trolled over to the other side and on the way over there I got smacked. So I trolled the mids back and forth catching the piss out of them for the next two hours. So there I was with a couple mids 6 and 8 feet under an indicator. I would kick backwards so slow that the indicator was not even making a wake. I caught enough fish that a lady from the shore hollered out to me to catch one for her. That was a good day for sure.

I have found them difficult to get hits on at certain times. On those days I go to leech patterns i.e. mohair leeches. I fish them slow until I start getting hits on them.

Tell us what gear you're using i.e. sinking lines, and we can make better suggestions to improve your success.

I have a floating line and a full sink (I think it's a class four, but it's been a while since I bought it so I'm not sure).

Thanks

[cool][#0000ff]I'm guessing the goddess girl is probably out of town for the holiday weekend. She should pop in on your questions the first of the week.[/#0000ff]

My favorite way of fishing from a toon or tube with fly line is use the sinking line and an olvie woolly bugger. Either drag it behind you or strip the line in. I find the fish cannot resist this offereing.

It isn't 100% guarantee. There are times I will switch to Nymphs. Absolutely what Old Troller said....switch up size and color and that can be crazy!
I hit one of my favorite Lakes this weekend that I usually ALWAYS catch fish with Chironomids.
I tried all the favorite colors....ended up with Black/blue wire and a white bead and SMALL!!! Like #14. I was fishing in 27' of water with the Chironomid at 19' and a Damsel at 17'. Crazy huh? But actually, I was seeing action at 20' so make them look up.
When it was on...OMG! Hold on, but then it could turn off that fast.
Then it was the sinking line, I use a Type VII, but your III can work, just count to ten or so. A 5' piece of fluoro for a leader and the same fly set up. Cast out 30' of line, let it sink then slow strip in.

One other thing. With this long awaited warm weather, there is tons of food for the fish. There is going to be times you can't BUY a bite.
I found my best times this weekend were 2 to 3:30 pm. And a bit of a chop.

Tkidder, we got to share some water sometime. Maybe I can help you get "HOOKED" so to speak, on deep nymphing.
